George Cleveland
Biography
George Alan Cleveland (September 17, 1885 – July 15, 1957) was a notable Canadian actor who made a significant mark in the film industry. Over the course of his career, he participated in more than 180 films from 1933 until 1954.
Cleveland is most famously recognized for his role as George "Gramps" Miller in the early seasons of the iconic U.S. television series Lassie. During its syndication and DVD releases, those initial seasons were retitled Jeff's Collie. In the show, he portrayed the cantankerous yet affectionate father-in-law of Ellen Miller, played by Jan Clayton, and the grandfather of Jeff, portrayed by Tommy Rettig, who was Lassie's owner.
Cleveland featured prominently in the first three seasons of the series from 1954 to 1956 and appeared in the initial twelve episodes of the fourth season in 1957. Following his passing in July 1957, his character’s death was woven into the narrative of the 13th episode of that fourth season. This plot twist served as a pivotal point in the storyline, ultimately leading to the sale of the Miller family farm and their move to Capitol City.
