Gordon Mitchell
Biography
Gordon Mitchell, originally named Charles Pendleton, was born in Colorado and had a distinguished military career, serving in both World War II and the Korean War, where he experienced a brief period as a prisoner of war. Following his military service, he transitioned to education, teaching in inner-city schools in California, while simultaneously immersing himself in the world of personal fitness and bodybuilding. It was during this time that he formed a friendship with Joe Gold, the founder of Gold’s Gym, and became part of Mae West's stage act as one of her strongmen.
Mitchell's striking presence caught the attention of Hollywood, leading to roles as an extra in films such as "Lil Abner," "The Enemy Below," and "The Ten Commandments," where he famously helped carry Moses before Ramses. As the Peplum genre gained popularity in Italy, he joined fellow Muscle Beach stars like Steve Reeves and Reg Park, moving to Italy to pursue acting opportunities. His unique looks and enthusiasm landed him roles in the booming Sword & Sandal films of the early 1960s, working with acclaimed directors like Marino Girolami and Michele Lupo. He later diversified into Spaghetti Westerns, Giallos, and even a small part in "Reflections in a Golden Eye" (1967), before his memorable role in Fellini's "Satyricon" (1969).
Mitchell established Cave Studios near Rome, although it was primarily utilized by low-budget filmmaker Demofilo Fidani. In the late 1980s, as the Italian film industry waned, he returned to California and became COO of World Gym, reconnecting with Joe Gold. He continued to act in low-budget films for enjoyment until his passing at age 80 in 2003. Notably, Arnold Schwarzenegger honored him at his memorial service, recognizing Mitchell's influential role in the bodybuilding community.
