Biography
Bethany Black, born on December 24, 1978, in Chorley, Lancashire, is a prominent English comedian, actor, and writer, celebrated for her unique voice in the world of stand-up comedy. Often referred to as "Britain's only goth, lesbian, transsexual comedian," she is known for her dark humor and willingness to tackle sensitive topics. Notably, Black made history as the first transgender person to portray a trans character in a British television series and is recognized as the first openly trans actor in the iconic series Doctor Who.
Despite a challenging upbringing marked by depression and personal struggles, including multiple suicide attempts, Black pursued higher education at Manchester Metropolitan University, earning a degree in film, television, and cultural studies. Her journey into comedy began at the age of 25 when she became a compere at a music venue, "Club Fuzzy," in Preston, before transitioning to stand-up comedy in clubs after an initial tough reception.
Bethany's breakthrough came in 2005 when she opened the Manchester Pride festival and later supported established comedians like Mick Miller, earning accolades from peers including Brendon Burns. Her 2008 show, "Beth Becomes Her," which delves into her own life story, garnered a nomination for "Best Debut" at the Leicester Comedy Festival, showcasing her growth as a performer. In 2018, she also openly addressed her diagnoses of autism, ADHD, OCD, and agoraphobia in her acclaimed show, Unwinnable, at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, further cementing her place as a significant voice in contemporary comedy.
