Basil Rathbone
Biography
Sir Basil Rathbone, KBE, MC, Kt (June 13, 1892 – July 21, 1967), was a distinguished English actor renowned for his remarkable contributions to both stage and screen. Rathbone first garnered acclaim as a Shakespearean performer in England before transitioning to film, where he showcased his talent in over 70 productions. He became particularly well-known for his roles in period dramas, swashbuckling adventures, and occasionally in the horror genre. Rathbone often brought to life charming villains and complex characters, such as Murdstone in the 1935 adaptation of David Copperfield and Sir Guy of Gisbourne in The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938).
However, Rathbone's most iconic portrayal was that of Sherlock Holmes, a character he embodied in fourteen Hollywood films from 1939 to 1946, as well as in a popular radio series. His portrayal solidified his status as a cinematic legend. In addition to his film career, Rathbone also made significant contributions to Broadway and television, earning a Tony Award in 1948 for Best Actor in a Play.
