Biography

Dulcie Gray, CBE (born Dulcie Winifred Catherine Bailey, 20 November 1915 – 15 November 2011) was a distinguished British actress, singer, mystery novelist, and passionate lepidopterist. Born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaya, Gray spent her early years in Wallingford, Oxfordshire. After the death of her father, she returned to Britain and pursued her artistic ambitions at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art, where she met her future husband, fellow actor Michael Denison. They married in 1939 and enjoyed a remarkable partnership that lasted 59 years, appearing together in over 100 stage productions.

Gray made a significant impact in the British film industry during the 1940s and 1950s, featuring in films such as *My Brother Jonathan*, *The Glass Mountain*, and *The Franchise Affair*. Her portrayal of the waitress Rose in the original stage production of *Brighton Rock* at the Garrick Theatre in 1944 garnered her a contract with Gainsborough Pictures, though she was ultimately not cast in the subsequent film adaptation.

In the 1980s, she became a familiar face on television as Kate Harvey in the BBC series *Howards' Way*. Gray and Denison made their Broadway debut in Oscar Wilde's *An Ideal Husband* in 1996. Following Denison's passing in 1998, she continued to perform, touring the UK in a stage version of *The Ladykillers* in 1999. Gray’s final screen appearance was in a 2000 episode of *Doctors*. She passed away from bronchial pneumonia on 15 November 2011, just days shy of her 96th birthday, at Denville Hall, a home for retired actors.
