Biography
Kim Loraine Appleby, born on August 28, 1961, is a renowned English pop singer and songwriter, celebrated for her contributions to the music scene both as a performer and a songwriter. She initially gained fame as part of the duo Mel and Kim, alongside her sister Melanie Appleby.
In November 1990, Kim launched her solo career with her debut album, *Kim Appleby*. The album featured tracks co-written with her sister, as well as new material Kim had developed after Mel’s passing. The lead single, "Don't Worry," soared to number two on the UK charts and found success across Europe, earning a nomination for the Ivor Novello Award for Best Contemporary Song in 1991. Her follow-up single, "G.L.A.D.," also achieved notable success, reaching number ten in the UK.
Although her second album, *Breakaway*, had limited release, it included singles like "Light of the World" and "Free Spirit." In 1994, Kim pivoted to focus on songwriting, collaborating with prominent figures such as Anders Bagge and Michael Garvin.
In addition to her songwriting, Kim played a significant role in the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors (BASCA), chairing the Ivor Novello Awards judging panel for over a decade. After a hiatus from live performances, she returned in 2018, marking her comeback with a series of new releases and performances. That same year, she co-presented the BBC Four series *Smashing Hits! The 80s Pop Map of Britain and Ireland*. In 2019, a box set of Mel and Kim's singles was released, celebrating their enduring legacy in pop music.
