Raúl Juliá
Biography
Raúl Rafael Juliá y Arcelay (March 9, 1940 – October 24, 1994) was a celebrated Puerto Rican actor known for his impactful contributions to film and theater, particularly in the early 1990s.
Hailing from San Juan, Juliá discovered his passion for acting during his school years. After completing his education, he chose to pursue a career in the performing arts. He began by making a name for himself in local theater, eventually being encouraged by the entertainment figure Orson Bean to relocate to New York City. A fluent bilingual speaker since childhood, Juliá became deeply involved in Broadway and Off-Broadway productions, including performances with the Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre.
His talent caught the attention of Joseph Papp, who offered him a position with the New York Shakespeare Festival. Juliá soon transitioned to television, appearing in shows like Love of Life and the beloved children's program Sesame Street. His role in Two Gentlemen of Verona earned him a Tony Award nomination, along with a Drama Desk Award. Over the years, he received multiple Tony nominations for his performances in Where's Charley?, The Threepenny Opera, and Nine. Throughout the 1980s, Juliá starred in several films, garnering Golden Globe nominations for his roles in Tempest and Kiss of the Spider Woman, for which he also won the National Board of Review Award for Best Actor.
In 1991 and 1993, he portrayed the iconic character Gomez Addams in two adaptations of The Addams Family. His final projects included The Burning Season and a film based on the Street Fighter video game. Tragically, Juliá faced serious health issues later that year and passed away after suffering a stroke. His funeral in Puerto Rico drew thousands of mourners. In recognition of his performance in The Burning Season, Juliá was awarded a posthumous Golden Globe and an Emmy Award.
