Karl Swenson

Biography

Karl Swenson (July 23, 1908 – October 8, 1978) was a versatile American actor whose career spanned theatre, radio, film, and television. He is perhaps best remembered for his memorable performance as the ominous doomsayer in Alfred Hitchcock's iconic film The Birds (1963) and for lending his voice to the character of Merlin in Disney's animated classic The Sword in the Stone (1963).

Swenson's television career was marked by numerous guest appearances, particularly in Westerns, with notable roles in series such as Bonanza, The Virginian, and Gunsmoke. He gained significant recognition for his portrayal of Lars Hanson, the founder of Walnut Grove, in the beloved series Little House on the Prairie, which aired from 1974 to 1978.

His filmography includes noteworthy performances in several films, including The Prize (1963), Major Dundee (1965), The Sons of Katie Elder (1965), The Cincinnati Kid (1965), Seconds (1966), Hour of the Gun (1967), ...tick...tick...tick... (1970), The Wild Country (1970), Vanishing Point (1971), and Ulzana's Raid (1972).

Originally from Brooklyn, New York, and of Swedish descent, Swenson initially aspired to become a doctor, studying at Marietta College before shifting his focus to acting. His radio work spanned the 1930s to the 1950s, and he made his film debut in 1943 with wartime documentaries. Swenson was married to fellow actress Joan Tompkins. He passed away from a heart attack in Torrington, Connecticut, shortly after filming a pivotal episode of Little House on the Prairie, which aired posthumously on October 16, 1978. He was laid to rest in Center Cemetery in New Milford, Connecticut.
