Robert Hossein
Biography
Robert Hossein was a prominent French film actor, director, and writer of Parsi descent, known for his significant contributions to cinema. Born on December 30, 1927, he first ventured into directing in 1956 with the film *Les salauds vont en enfer*, drawing inspiration from the works of Frédéric Dard, whose narratives often influenced his later projects. Hossein's directorial prowess came to prominence with his 1982 adaptation of *Les Misérables*, and he appeared in notable films such as *Vice and Virtue*, *Le Casse*, *Les Uns et les Autres*, and *Venus Beauty Institute*.
His later roles included playing the husband of Michèle Mercier in the *Angélique* series and portraying a conflicted Catholic priest in *Prêtres interdits* (Forbidden Priests) in 1973. Renowned for his trademark style, Hossein frequently subverted traditional suspense narratives to explore complex ritualistic relationships and the destructive nature of guilt, themes influenced by his admiration for Dostoevsky.
Despite achieving modest international success with films like *Toi, le venin* and *Le vampire de Dusseldorf*, Hossein faced criticism from New Wave proponents for his melodramatic approach. After stepping back from directing in 1970 due to mixed reception, he focused on theater, where his talents were highly regarded. He returned to film directing only twice thereafter.
Hossein's personal life included three marriages, notably to actress Marina Vlady, with whom he had two sons. He also converted to Catholicism in 1971 during a visit to Italy. His cinematic legacy, while commercially elusive, remains a testament to his artistic vision.
