Dorothy Tree
Biography
Dorothy Tree, born on May 21, 1906, and passing away on February 13, 1992, was a versatile American actress, voice educator, and author. Over her career, she showcased her talent in a variety of character roles, appearing in approximately 49 films from 1927 to 1951.
Among her most memorable performances were her portrayal of Martha, the mother of famed football coach Knute Rockne, in the film "Knute Rockne, All American," and as May Emmerich, the ailing spouse of Louis Calhern, in "The Asphalt Jungle."
However, Tree's career faced significant challenges when she was blacklisted due to her alleged communist ties during the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) investigations. This adversity led her to pivot towards a new path as a voice teacher in New York City. In her teaching, she focused on the importance of clear diction, intonation nuances, and expressive vocal techniques. Her expertise in the field culminated in the publication of four instructional books on voice training, contributing to her legacy beyond acting. Dorothy Tree's journey reflects both her artistic contributions to cinema and her commitment to education in the performing arts.
