Barbra Streisand
Biography
Barbra Joan Streisand (born April 24, 1942) is a celebrated American singer, actress, and director, whose career has spanned over six decades. Renowned for her versatility across various entertainment realms, she stands out as one of the few performers to have achieved the prestigious EGOT status, having won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony.
With over 150 million records sold globally, Streisand ranks among the world’s best-selling recording artists. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) recognizes her as the second highest-certified female artist in the U.S., with 68.5 million certified album units. She has been honored with numerous accolades, including two Academy Awards, ten Grammy Awards (along with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and the Grammy Legend Award), five Emmy Awards, and nine Golden Globes, among others.
Streisand's journey began in the early 1960s in nightclubs and on Broadway. After appearing on various television shows, she signed with Columbia Records, prioritizing artistic control over a higher salary. Her debut album, *The Barbra Streisand Album* (1963), won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year.
In the late '60s, she transitioned to film, earning an Academy Award for her role in *Funny Girl* (1968) and later achieving success with films like *Hello, Dolly!* (1969) and *The Way We Were* (1973). In 1983, she made history by becoming the first woman to write, produce, direct, and star in a major studio film with *Yentl*, which won an Oscar for Best Score. Streisand's directorial work continued with *The Prince of Tides* (1991) and *The Mirror Has Two Faces* (1996).
