David Bowie
Biography
David Robert Jones, better known as David Bowie, was a groundbreaking English singer, songwriter, and actor whose influence on popular music extended over five decades. Renowned for his innovative artistry, particularly throughout the 1970s, Bowie was a master of reinvention and visual expression. With an estimated 140 million records sold globally, he stands as one of the best-selling artists in history. In the UK, his impressive accolades include nine platinum albums, eleven gold, and eight silver certifications, along with eleven number-one albums. In the United States, he achieved five platinum and seven gold certifications, culminating in his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.
Born in South London, Bowie developed a passion for music early on and pursued studies in art, music, and design before launching his musical career in 1963. His breakthrough single, “Space Oddity,” reached the UK Singles Chart top five in July 1969. The glam rock era saw the emergence of his iconic alter ego, Ziggy Stardust, highlighted by the hit “Starman” and the acclaimed album *The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars*. In 1975, Bowie transitioned to a “plastic soul” sound, achieving major success in the US with “Fame” and the album *Young Americans*. His artistic evolution continued with the Berlin Trilogy, featuring *Low*, *Heroes*, and *Lodger*, all of which garnered critical acclaim.
Bowie's later career saw him explore various genres, including industrial and jungle, while also acting in notable films such as *Labyrinth* and *The Prestige*. After a hiatus from live performances, he returned in 2013 with *The Next Day* but sadly passed away from liver cancer just two days after the release of his final album, *Blackstar*, in January 2016.
