Yootha Joyce
Biography
Yootha Joyce was a celebrated British actress, best remembered for her portrayal of Mildred Roper in the iconic 1970s sitcom *Man About the House* and its successful spin-off, *George and Mildred*. Born in 1927 to musical parents Hurst Needham and Jessica Rivett, Joyce honed her craft at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). She gained early experience touring with ENSA and later became a prominent figure at the Joan Littlewood Theatre Workshop.
Throughout her career, Joyce appeared in a variety of television programs including *The Avengers*, *Man in a Suitcase*, *The Saint*, *Jason King*, and *Steptoe and Son*. Her film credits included notable works such as *The Pumpkin Eater*, *A Man for All Seasons*, *Charlie Bubbles*, *All the Right Noises*, and *Burke and Hare*.
Joyce's personal life included a marriage to fellow actor Glynn Edwards, which lasted from 1956 until their divorce in 1968, yet they maintained a lifelong friendship. Despite her successes, Joyce struggled with alcoholism and tragically passed away from liver failure in 1980, just days after turning 53, with her sitcom co-star Brian Murphy by her side. Her legacy endures, notably when the band The Smiths featured her image on the cover of their single "Ask" in 1986, solidifying her status as a cultural icon in British entertainment.
