Biography
Lionel Barrymore, originally named Lionel Herbert Blythe, was born on April 28, 1878, and passed away on November 15, 1954. A prominent figure in American entertainment, he excelled as an actor across stage, screen, and radio, and also took on the role of a film director. Barrymore achieved significant acclaim when he won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his captivating performance in the 1931 film A Free Soul.
Modern audiences often recognize him as the scheming Mr. Potter from Frank Capra’s beloved 1946 classic, It’s a Wonderful Life. Additionally, he is fondly remembered for his portrayal of Ebenezer Scrooge, a role he brought to life during annual radio adaptations of A Christmas Carol throughout the last twenty years of his career.
Barrymore also left a lasting impact through his character Dr. Leonard Gillespie in MGM's Dr. Kildare series, appearing in nine films that featured the doctor and later reprising the role in six additional films focused exclusively on Gillespie.
