Vincent Gallo
Biography
Vincent Gallo, born on April 11, 1961, is a multifaceted American artist renowned for his work as an actor, director, producer, screenwriter, singer-songwriter, and painter. While he has appeared in notable mainstream films like *Goodfellas*, Gallo is best known for his contributions to independent cinema. He wrote, directed, scored, and starred in *Buffalo '66*, and undertook similar roles in *The Brown Bunny*, where he also served as the film's cinematographer. His filmography includes memorable performances in *Arizona Dream*, *The Funeral*, and *Palookaville*.
Gallo's artistic journey began in the late 1970s and early 1980s when he emerged as a painter in New York City's vibrant art scene, exhibiting with renowned dealer Annina Nosei. He also explored the music world, forming a rap duo and participating in the groundbreaking hip-hop television show *Graffiti Rock*, alongside playing in the industrial band Bohack, which produced the album *It Took Several Wives*.
In the early 2000s, Gallo released several solo music projects through WARP Records. Known for his candid and often sardonic demeanor, he once remarked, "I stopped painting in 1990 at the peak of my success just to deny people my beautiful paintings; and I did it out of spite." His powerful performance as a voiceless fleeing Muslim prisoner in Jerzy Skolimowski's *Essential Killing* earned him the Coppa Volpi for Best Actor at the 67th Venice International Film Festival. Gallo's own film, *Promises Written In Water*, which he wrote, directed, produced, and starred in, was showcased in competition at the same festival.
