Elizabeth Patterson
Biography
Mary Elizabeth Patterson (November 22, 1874 – January 31, 1966) was a versatile American actress whose career spanned theatre, film, and television. She is perhaps best remembered for her portrayal of Matilda Trumbull, the charming elderly neighbor on the beloved sitcom *I Love Lucy*, a role that brought her widespread recognition in her later years.
Patterson's film journey began in 1926 when she debuted in the silent film *The Boy Friend* at the age of 51. As the film industry transitioned to "talkies," she remained an active presence in Hollywood during the 1930s, appearing in over five films annually. Her impressive body of work from this era includes notable titles such as *Tarnished Lady*, *Dinner at Eight*, and *Hold Your Man*. She also played Susan in two adaptations of John Willard's classic play *The Cat and the Canary*.
In the 1940s, Patterson continued to thrive, contributing to more than 30 films, including the significant role of Eunice Habersham in the 1949 racial drama *Intruder in the Dust*, adapted from William Faulkner’s novel. As television began to rise in popularity, she shifted her focus, making her television debut in 1950 and appearing in numerous shows, including *Alfred Hitchcock Presents* and *77 Sunset Strip*.
Her work on *I Love Lucy* began in 1952, where her character became a favorite among fans. Patterson, who remained unmarried, lived at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel for much of her career. She passed away in Los Angeles at the age of 91, leaving behind a legacy in American entertainment. She is interred in Savannah Cemetery in her home state of Tennessee.
