Biography

John George Norman Bird (30 October 1924 – 22 April 2005) was a celebrated English character actor known for his distinctive roles in film and television. Born in Coalville, Leicestershire, Bird honed his craft at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) before making a notable entrance into the West End with Peter Brook's adaptation of The Winter's Tale at the Phoenix Theatre in 1951.

Bird's film career commenced with a role as the foreman in An Inspector Calls (1954), and he quickly became a prominent figure in British cinema during the 1950s and 1960s, featuring in nearly 50 films. Some of his noteworthy works include The Angry Silence (1960), The League of Gentlemen (1960), Whistle Down the Wind (1961), Victim (1961), and Term of Trial (1962), where he shared the screen with legends like Laurence Olivier and Sean Connery in The Hill (1965).

With over 200 television appearances to his name, Bird was particularly recognized for his portrayal of Mr. Braithwaite in the beloved series Worzel Gummidge (1979–81) and as Mr. Arrad in the classic Fawlty Towers episode "Waldorf Salad" (1979). His extensive television roles spanned popular shows such as Steptoe and Son, Rising Damp, and Yes Minister. Notably, his 200th television appearance occurred in the 1990 series Stay Lucky alongside Dennis Waterman. One of his final film roles was a taxi driver in Richard Attenborough's Shadowlands (1993), marking the end of a remarkable career in the performing arts.
