Biography

Anthony Perkins (April 4, 1932 – September 12, 1992) was a prominent American actor and singer, celebrated primarily for his iconic portrayal of Norman Bates in Alfred Hitchcock's groundbreaking thriller, Psycho. His career began with his film debut in The Actress (1953), directed by George Cukor, after which he gained acclaim on Broadway in Elia Kazan’s production of Tea and Sympathy (1955).

Perkins quickly ascended to stardom, sharing the screen with illustrious actors such as Henry Fonda in The Tin Star, Sophia Loren in Desire Under the Elms, and Audrey Hepburn in Green Mansions. His Hollywood tenure culminated in the 1960s, after which he ventured to Europe, collaborating with legends like Ingrid Bergman in Aimez-vous Brahms?, Melina Mercouri in Phaedra, and Brigitte Bardot in Une ravissante idiote. He made a notable return to Hollywood in 1968 with the cult classic Pretty Poison.

Throughout his career, Perkins continued to shine, working with talents like Diana Ross in Mahogany, Jeff Goldblum in Remember My Name, and Elizabeth Taylor in Winter Kills. In 1973, he co-wrote The Last of Sheila with Stephen Sondheim, further showcasing his diverse talents. Over the years, Perkins received numerous accolades, including a Golden Globe, a Cannes Award, and a David di Donatello Award, in addition to nominations for two Tony Awards and an Academy Award. He passed away from complications related to AIDS on September 12, 1992.
