Lloyd Nolan
Biography
Lloyd Benedict Nolan (August 11, 1902 – September 27, 1985) was a distinguished American actor known for his impactful performances in both film and television. He gained prominence in the 1940s as the original private investigator Michael Shayne in a series of B movies, which helped solidify his place in cinematic history.
Born in San Francisco, California, Nolan was the son of James Nolan, a shoe manufacturer of Irish descent. He attended Santa Clara Preparatory School and briefly studied at Stanford University before dropping out to pursue acting, a choice his parents opposed. After serving in the United States Merchant Marine, he joined the Dennis Players theatrical troupe, which marked the beginning of his acting career.
Nolan transitioned to Hollywood, where he often portrayed authoritative figures such as doctors, detectives, and policemen. His notable roles included FBI Agent Briggs in the 1945 film *The House on 92nd Street*, a groundbreaking work that depicted real events of World War II sabotage attempts. He later reprised this role in *The Street with No Name* (1948).
In television, Nolan made significant appearances, including a memorable role as Dr. Elisha Pittman in *Dick Powell's Zane Grey Theatre*. He featured in acclaimed series like *The Outer Limits*, *Bonanza*, and *The Virginian*. A lifelong cigar and pipe smoker, Nolan passed away from lung cancer at the age of 83, leaving behind a legacy celebrated by fans and colleagues alike. He was laid to rest at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles.
