Leigh Whannell, born on January 17, 1977, is a prominent Australian filmmaker and actor known for his significant contributions to the horror genre. He collaborated closely with fellow filmmaker James Wan, co-creating the iconic Saw franchise, which began with the original film in 2004. Whannell was instrumental in crafting the screenplays for several entries in the series, including co-writing the second and third films while also serving as producer or executive producer on all installments. He made a memorable on-screen appearance as Adam Stanheight in three of the films. In addition to his work on Saw, he penned the screenplay for the 2009 Saw video game and co-wrote the horror-comedy Cooties in 2014.

Whannell transitioned into directing with Insidious: Chapter 3 in 2015, marking the beginning of a successful directorial career.
