Biography
Ayako Wakao (若尾 文子, Wakao Ayako) was born on November 8, 1933, in Tokyo, Japan. Renowned as one of Japan's most prominent actresses of the 20th century, Wakao's illustrious career began in 1951 when she joined Daiei Studios as a member of the fifth "New Face" group. Over the years, she has showcased her remarkable talent in over 100 films, in addition to numerous television movies and series.
Wakao developed a strong collaboration with acclaimed director Yasuzo Masumura, appearing in 20 of his films, which significantly contributed to her popularity. Furthermore, she was a favored actress of Kon Ichikawa, featuring prominently in seven of his projects. Her impressive filmography also includes significant roles in classic works such as Kenji Mizoguchi's "A Geisha" and "Street of Shame", as well as Yasujirō Ozu's "Floating Weeds".
