Gary Basaraba

Biography

Gary Basaraba, born on March 16, 1959, is a distinguished Canadian actor celebrated for his portrayals of American law enforcement characters. He gained prominence for his role as Sergeant Richard Santoro in the critically acclaimed series Brooklyn South, created by Steven Bochco, and as Officer Ray Heckler in the dramatic ensemble of Boomtown. In the latter, Basaraba's dedication to authenticity was evident as he performed many of his own driving stunts and meticulously depicted police protocols, as noted in the DVD commentary for the show's inaugural season.

His versatility as an actor is showcased in a variety of notable roles, including his portrayal of the legendary journalist Heywood Broun in the 1994 film Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle, and Sheriff Grady Kilgore in the beloved Fried Green Tomatoes. He also appeared as Saint Andrew in Martin Scorsese's The Last Temptation of Christ and had a significant role in Sweet Dreams.

In addition to these credits, Basaraba voiced Homer Zuckerman in the remake of Charlotte's Web and played Jack Grainger, the father, in the holiday classic One Magic Christmas alongside Mary Steenburgen. Since 2007, he has been featured in the Canadian television series Mixed Blessings.

Basaraba's talent extends to the Law & Order franchise, where he made three guest appearances, including roles in the original series and the Special Victims Unit. Recently, it was announced that he will lend his voice to Hefty Smurf in the live-action/CG adaptation of The Smurfs.
