Lionel Atwill
Biography
Lionel Atwill (March 1, 1885 – April 22, 1946) was a prominent English actor whose career spanned both stage and film, with roots in Croydon, London. Initially pursuing a career in architecture, Atwill made his theatrical debut at the Garrick Theatre in London in 1904. By 1918, he had achieved stardom on Broadway, and shortly thereafter, he ventured into film with his debut in 1919.
Atwill garnered significant acclaim in the 1930s for his roles in American horror films. He is perhaps best remembered for his chilling performances as the deranged sculptor in Warner Brothers' *Mystery of the Wax Museum* (1933) and as Inspector Krogh in *Son of Frankenstein* (1939), a character later parodied by Kenneth Mars in Mel Brooks's *Young Frankenstein* (1974). Beyond horror, Atwill often portrayed authoritative figures, such as in RKO's *The Wrong Road* (1937), where he played an investigator urging a young couple to abandon their criminal ways.
His versatility extended to portrayals of iconic characters, including Dr. James Mortimer in the 1939 adaptation of *The Hound of the Baskervilles* and the notorious Professor Moriarty in *Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon* (1943).
Despite his contributions to cinema, Atwill's career suffered in the early 1940s due to a scandal involving allegations of perjury related to a sex scandal. He passed away while working on the film serial *Lost City of the Jungle*. His ashes were eventually placed in the Chapel of the Pines Crematory.
