Frank De Kova

Biography

Frank De Kova, born in New York City in 1910, transformed his intimidating presence—marked by a menacing scowl and intense gaze—into a successful career portraying a variety of formidable characters, including ruthless henchmen, fierce Native American leaders, and harsh Mexican military officers. Surprisingly, before entering the entertainment world, he worked as a schoolteacher.

De Kova transitioned from education to the performing arts, taking on roles in numerous Shakespearean productions before making his mark on Broadway. His breakthrough came with a starring role in the acclaimed detective play "Detective Story," which paved the way for his Hollywood debut in the 1952 film *Viva Zapata!*, where he played the conniving Mexican colonel responsible for orchestrating Zapata's assassination. Throughout the 1950s, he became known for portraying gangsters and gunfighters, while also showcasing his versatility in the cult classic *Teenage Cave Man* (1958).

In addition to his film work, De Kova made a significant impact on television, notably as a Mafia hitman in an episode of *The Untouchables* (1959). However, it was his role as Chief Wild Eagle in the comedy series *F Troop* (1965) that left a lasting impression; his comedic talent shone as he partnered with Forrest Tucker's Sgt. O'Rourke in various schemes, stealing scenes from veteran actors. Frank De Kova passed away in his sleep in 1981, leaving behind a legacy of diverse and memorable performances.
