Akaji Maro (麿 赤児 Maro Akaji), born on February 23, 1943, is a renowned Japanese actor, butoh performer, and theater director. He is best known as the founder of Dairakudakan, a prominent theater company that has significantly contributed to the development of contemporary butoh dance and performance in Japan. With a career spanning several decades, Maro has established himself as a pivotal figure in the arts, blending traditional and avant-garde elements in his work.
Maro’s artistic legacy extends to his family, as he is the father of notable figures in the film and theater industry.
