Ginger Rogers
Biography
Ginger Rogers, born on July 16, 1911, and passing away on April 25, 1995, was a celebrated American actress, dancer, and singer whose talents graced film, stage, radio, and television throughout the twentieth century. Over her extensive career, she starred in 73 films, earning acclaim particularly for her iconic partnership with Fred Astaire in a series of ten musical films. Her portrayal in *Kitty Foyle* earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress, marking a significant milestone in her career.
Rogers first gained prominence after winning a Charleston dance contest in 1925, which propelled her into vaudeville. She soon made her Broadway debut in *Girl Crazy*, leading to a contract with Paramount Pictures, although her time there concluded after five films. Her breakout in cinema came with a supporting role in *42nd Street*. The 1930s saw her collaborate with Astaire in nine films that became major hits for RKO Pictures, including classics like *Top Hat* and *Swing Time*. Following a couple of unsuccessful films with Astaire, she diversified into dramatic and comedic roles, becoming one of the highest-paid actresses of the 1940s.
After reuniting with Astaire in the 1949 film *The Barkleys of Broadway*, Rogers experienced a decline in the 1950s but made a triumphant return to Broadway with *Hello, Dolly!* in 1965. She continued to act on stage and television, ultimately being honored at the Kennedy Center in 1992. Rogers, known for her phrase "backwards and in high heels," remains a quintessential figure of Hollywood’s Golden Age, ranking 14th on AFI's list of female stars of classic American cinema. She published her autobiography, *Ginger: My Story*, in 1991.
