Biography

Alexander Scourby (November 13, 1913 – February 22, 1985) was a prominent American actor and voice artist, celebrated for his powerful and distinctive voice. He gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of the menacing mobster Mike Lagana in Fritz Lang's classic film The Big Heat (1953). However, Scourby's legacy extends far beyond the silver screen; he is perhaps best known in the English-speaking world for his groundbreaking recordings of the entire King James Version audio Bible, which have been issued in various formats over the years. Following this, he also recorded the complete Revised Standard Version of the Bible.

In addition to his work with religious texts, Scourby contributed significantly to the world of audiobooks, recording an impressive 422 titles specifically for the visually impaired, a project he regarded as his most meaningful achievement. His contributions to the audiobook industry have earned him a reputation as one of the finest narrators in history, with many praising his voice as the greatest ever recorded.
