Biography
Robert John Downey Jr. (born April 4, 1965), widely recognized as RDJ, is an acclaimed American actor whose career has made him one of the highest-grossing actors in cinematic history, with his films collectively grossing over $14 billion worldwide. The son of filmmaker Robert Downey Sr., he has received numerous prestigious awards, including an Academy Award, Emmy Award, three Golden Globe Awards, two BAFTA Awards, and three Screen Actors Guild Awards. In 2008, Time magazine included him in its list of the 100 most influential people, and from 2013 to 2015, Forbes recognized him as Hollywood's highest-paid actor.
Downey's acting journey began at the tender age of five when he appeared in his father's 1970 film Pound. He later became known for his performances in teen classics like Weird Science (1985) and Less than Zero (1987). His portrayal of Charlie Chaplin in the 1992 biopic Chaplin earned him a BAFTA Award and his first Oscar nomination. After facing struggles with substance abuse, Downey found new life in his career with a Golden Globe-winning role on the TV show Ally McBeal and made a remarkable comeback with films such as The Singing Detective (2003) and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005).
His portrayal of Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starting in 2008, solidified his place as a global superstar. Recently, he garnered critical acclaim for his role as Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer (2023), winning an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor. In 2024, he received a Primetime Emmy nomination for his performance in the miniseries The Sympathizer and made his Broadway debut in Ayad Akhtar's McNeal.
