Biography
Max von Sydow, originally named Carl Adolf von Sydow, was a renowned Swedish actor born on April 10, 1929. He passed away on March 8, 2020, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in cinema. In 2002, he also acquired French citizenship. Over the course of his illustrious career, von Sydow showcased his talent across a multitude of languages, including Swedish, Norwegian, English, Italian, German, Danish, French, and Spanish, and featured in numerous films and supporting roles.
Among his most iconic performances is the role of knight Antonius Block in Ingmar Bergman's classic The Seventh Seal, which marked the beginning of an impressive collaboration with the director that spanned eleven films. He is perhaps best remembered for the unforgettable scene where he plays chess with Death. Other notable roles include Jesus in George Stevens's epic The Greatest Story Ever Told, Father Merrin in William Friedkin's horror masterpiece The Exorcist, the assassin Joubert in Three Days of the Condor, and the villainous Ming the Merciless in the 1980 adaptation of Flash Gordon.
Throughout his career, von Sydow earned two Academy Award nominations: one for Best Leading Actor in Pelle the Conqueror (1988) and another for Best Supporting Actor in Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (2011), solidifying his status as a cinematic legend.
