Marshall Thompson

Biography

Marshall Thompson (November 27, 1925 – May 18, 1992) was a notable American actor in film and television, originally named James Marshall Thompson, born in Peoria, Illinois. His career began in 1943 when he was signed by Universal Pictures, where he quickly became known for his boy-next-door charm. He showcased his talents alongside the renowned singing star Gloria Jean in the film Reckless Age, earning a weekly salary of $350. In 1946, following Universal's reduction of its contract players, Thompson transitioned to MGM, where he secured a range of film roles that continued to grow in prominence.

In the 1950s, Thompson embraced freelance opportunities, starring in several horror and science-fiction films, including the cult classic It! The Terror from Beyond Space (1958), which served as an inspiration for Ridley Scott's iconic film Alien. He also took on the role of Mel Hunter in the syndicated series World of Giants, which revolved around a man navigating life after being miniaturized.

By the 1960s, Thompson's on-screen presence evolved, leading to notable roles in CBS’s sitcom Angel (1960–1961) and the popular series Daktari, which was based on his 1965 film Clarence, the Cross-Eyed Lion. His later work included appearances in films such as The Turning Point (1977) and The Formula (1980). Thompson was also related by marriage to actor Richard Long, best known for his role in The Big Valley. He passed away from congestive heart failure at the age of sixty-six in Royal Oak, Michigan.
