Ralph Rexford Bellamy (June 17, 1904 – November 29, 1991) was a distinguished American actor whose extensive career spanned 62 years across stage, film, and television. He earned recognition for both lead and supporting roles, notably receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in *The Awful Truth* (1937), where he starred alongside Irene Dunne and Cary Grant.

Bellamy's cinematic journey commenced with *The Secret Six* (1931), featuring notable actors such as Wallace Beery, Jean Harlow, and Clark Gable. By 1933, he had already appeared in 22 films, including *Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm* (1932) and *Picture Snatcher* (1933) alongside James Cagney. His impressive work throughout the 1930s included a significant role in *His Girl Friday* (1940), where he played the naïve boyfriend opposite Cary Grant.

In the 1940s, Bellamy portrayed detective Ellery Queen in several films and starred in classics such as *The Wolf Man* (1941) and *The Ghost of Frankenstein* (1942). He also made a mark in television, headlining the noir series *Man Against Crime* from 1949 to 1956, which was notable for its live broadcasts.

Bellamy's later career included an Emmy Award nomination for his portrayal of Franklin D. Roosevelt in the mini-series *The Winds of War* (1983), reviving his earlier role from *Sunrise at Campobello*. His influence extended beyond acting, as he served four terms as President of Actors' Equity from 1952 to 1964, solidifying his legacy in the entertainment industry.
