Sergio Castellitto

Biography

Sergio Castellitto, born on August 18, 1953, in Rome, is a prominent Italian actor, director, and screenwriter. His roots trace back to Southern Italy, with parents hailing from Molise and Abruzzo. Castellitto honed his craft at the Silvio D'Amico National Academy of Dramatic Art, graduating in 1978. He made his theatrical debut in public theater, performing in Shakespeare's Measure for Measure at the Teatro di Roma, and took on significant roles in Brecht's La Madre and Giordano Bruno's Candelaio. Under the guidance of director Otomar Krejka at Teatro di Genova, he portrayed Tuzenbach in Chekhov's Three Sisters and Jean in Strindberg's Miss Julie, among other notable performances.

His film career took off in 1983 with Luciano Tovoli’s The General of the Dead Army, alongside legends Marcello Mastroianni and Michel Piccoli. Castellitto gained further recognition through roles in films like The Great Pumpkin and The Star Maker. The late 1980s saw him featured in various Italian miniseries, including Un siciliano in Sicilia and Piazza Navona.

His notable films include La famiglia, L'ultimo bacio, and Don't Move, the latter penned by his wife, Margaret Mazzantini. In France, he starred in Jacques Rivette's Va savoir. Castellitto's directorial debut was Libero Burro, followed by the acclaimed Don't Move. More recently, he directed Twice Born, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival. He is currently seen in the television series In Treatment as Giovanni and is married to Mazzantini, with whom he shares four children, including actor Pietro.
