Biography

Joan Gardner (November 16, 1926 – December 10, 1992) was a versatile American actress celebrated primarily for her extensive work in voice-over roles. In addition to her acting, she was a talented screenwriter, songwriter, author, and composer.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, to jazz musician Jack "Jumbo" Gardner and his wife, Adelaide (Cline) Gardner, Joan began her artistic journey on the stage. Her writing career took off in the late 1940s when she penned scripts for popular television programs such as *Pantomime Quiz* and *Time For Beany* during 1948-1949.

Though she contributed to film music composition, Joan garnered significant acclaim for her voice work in animated series and radio. Among her notable roles were Spunky in *The Adventures of Spunky and Tadpole*, Tanta Kringle and other characters in the beloved Christmas special *Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town*, and Bonnie Bonnet alongside Groucho Marx's portrayal of Napoleon in *The Mad, Mad, Mad Comedians*. She also voiced Zazu the Fairy Godmother in *Pound Puppies*.

On December 8, 1960, Joan married producer Edward Janis and often wrote under the name Joan Janis. Joan Gardner's remarkable career came to a close when she passed away from cancer on December 10, 1992, leaving behind a rich legacy in the entertainment industry.
