Biography
Mary Alice was born on December 3, 1936, in Indianola, Mississippi, to Ozelar Jurnakin (Smith) and Sam Smith. She carved a niche for herself in the entertainment industry, gaining recognition for her performances in notable films such as *The Matrix Revolutions* (2003), *Awakenings* (1990), and *Malcolm X* (1992). Prior to her ascent in acting, Mary dedicated herself to teaching in elementary schools. During her early career as a struggling actress, she supplemented her income by doing laundry for her fellow cast members, earning a modest $200 per week.
Mary was a passionate advocate for liberal Democratic values, feminism, and civil rights, remaining committed to these causes throughout her life. In recognition of her significant contributions to theater, she was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 2000. After a fruitful career, she officially retired from acting in 2005.
Mary Alice passed away from natural causes on July 27, 2022, in Manhattan, New York City. Honoring her final wishes, she was laid to rest alongside her siblings at Oak Wood Cemetery in Chicago, Illinois. Her legacy continues to inspire many, reflecting her commitment to both her craft and the important social issues she championed.
