Richard Lewis Deacon (May 14, 1922 – August 8, 1984) was a prominent American actor celebrated for his memorable supporting roles in classic television series. He is best remembered for portraying the ineffectual producer Mel Cooley on The Dick Van Dyke Show and the pompous Fred Rutherford, father to Lumpy, on Leave It to Beaver.
