Muhammad Ali
Biography
Muhammad Ali, originally named Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr., was born on January 17, 1942, in Louisville, Kentucky, and passed away on June 3, 2016. Renowned as "The Greatest," Ali stands out as one of the most influential and celebrated personalities of the 20th century, revered as one of the greatest boxers in history.
Ali's boxing journey began at the tender age of 12, and by 18, he clinched a gold medal in the light heavyweight category at the 1960 Summer Olympics before turning professional later that year. His conversion to Islam in 1961 marked a significant turning point in his life. On February 25, 1964, at just 22 years old, he shocked the world by defeating Sonny Liston to claim the heavyweight championship. Shortly thereafter, on March 6, he announced his new name, Muhammad Ali.
In 1966, Ali made headlines once more by refusing military service based on his religious beliefs and opposition to the Vietnam War, resulting in a conviction for draft evasion and a loss of his boxing titles. His eventual Supreme Court victory in 1971 restored his legacy, although he lost nearly four prime years of his career. Ali became a symbol of pride and resistance during the civil rights movement, advocating for racial equality and social justice.
Throughout his illustrious career, Ali achieved remarkable feats, including being a three-time lineal heavyweight champion and holding records that stood for decades. He faced legendary opponents like Joe Frazier and George Foreman in iconic bouts that captivated audiences worldwide. Known for his charisma and eloquent trash-talking, Ali's influence extended beyond boxing, making him a cultural icon and a pioneer in sports history.
