Biography

Robert Powell, born on June 1, 1944, is a prominent English actor. He embarked on his acting journey in 1964 while studying at Manchester University. By 1967, Powell had made his film debut, later securing his first leading role in the film The Italian Job, released in 1969. His notable works encompass Franco Zeffirelli's acclaimed miniseries "Jesus of Nazareth" (1977), Ken Russell's films Tommy (1975) and Mahler (1974), a remake of The Thirty-Nine Steps (1978), and the well-known television series "Doomwatch" (1970).

On August 29, 1975, he married Barbara 'Babs' Lord, and together they have a son and a daughter. Powell's talent was recognized on an international scale in 1982 when he received the Best Actor award at the Venice Film Festival for his role in Imperative (1982). Additionally, he won the Best Actor accolade at the Paris Film Festival for his performance in Harlequin (1980). For his unforgettable portrayal of Jesus in Jesus of Nazareth, he garnered several prestigious awards, including Best Actor honors from TV Times and Italian TV Times, the international arts prize at the Fiuggi Film Festival, and the grand prize at the Saint-Vincent Film Festival, along with a nomination from The Irish Academy of Film and Television Arts. Reflecting on his role as Jesus, Powell humorously remarked, "I hope Jesus Christ will be the last in my line of sensitive young men for quite a while."
