Elvis Aaron Presley (January 8, 1935 – August 16, 1977), known simply as Elvis, was a pivotal figure in American music and culture, often referred to as the "King of Rock and Roll." His dynamic performances and distinctive vocal style not only reshaped the landscape of music but also stirred considerable controversy, particularly during a time of significant racial change in the United States.

Born in Tupelo, Mississippi, Elvis moved to Memphis, Tennessee, at the age of 13. His musical journey began in 1954 at Sun Records under the guidance of producer Sam Phillips, who aimed to bridge racial divides through music. With rhythm guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black, Presley pioneered rockabilly, a lively blend of country and rhythm and blues. In 1955, after drummer D.J. Fontana joined, RCA Victor signed him, with Colonel Tom Parker as his manager. Presley's debut RCA single, "Heartbreak Hotel," released in January 1956, quickly soared to number one, leading to the sale of ten million singles within a year.

Elvis made his film debut in 1956's Love Me Tender and was drafted into the military in 1958. After his return, he focused on Hollywood films and soundtracks, producing hits like Jailhouse Rock (1957) and Blue Hawaii (1961). His iconic 1968 television special, Elvis, marked a triumphant return to live performances, culminating in the historic Aloha from Hawaii concert in 1973. Despite his immense success, struggles with health issues and substance abuse marred his later years, leading to his untimely passing at Graceland in 1977 at the age of 42.
