William Demarest
Biography
Carl William Demarest (February 27, 1892 – December 27, 1983) was a distinguished American character actor, renowned for his portrayal of Uncle Charley in the beloved sitcom My Three Sons. A World War I veteran, Demarest embarked on a prolific acting career that spanned over five decades, during which he appeared in more than 140 films from 1926 through the 1970s. Notably, he often embodied crusty yet endearing characters.
Demarest's early career in entertainment began in vaudeville with his wife, Estelle Collette (born Esther Zychlin), under the stage name "Demarest and Colette." He later transitioned to Broadway and became a frequent collaborator with director Preston Sturges, featuring in ten of his films, including classics such as The Lady Eve and Sullivan's Travels. His presence at Paramount Studios was so iconic that his name was referenced in the film Sunset Boulevard as a potential star for a screenplay.
In television, Demarest showcased his versatility in various roles, including a memorable appearance alongside Roscoe Ates in the 1958 episode "And the Desert Shall Blossom" of CBS's Alfred Hitchcock Presents. He starred as the lead in the short-lived NBC sitcom Love and Marriage during the 1959-1960 season.
Demarest's legacy reached its peak with his role as Uncle Charley from 1965 to 1972 in My Three Sons, where he stepped in for William Frawley and rejoined longtime friend Fred MacMurray. His contributions to film and television continue to be celebrated.
