O'Brien's early life was marked by artistic influence; her father, Lawrence O'Brien, was a circus performer who sadly passed away before her birth, while her mother, Gladys Flores, was a celebrated flamenco dancer. O'Brien's heritage is a blend of Irish and Spanish descent. She made her film debut at just four years old in Babes on Broadway (1941), but it was her impactful performance in Journey for Margaret (1942) that catapulted her to fame, prompting her name change.

Her notable works include a poignant role in Jane Eyre (1944) and her iconic performance as "Tootie" in the classic musical Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), alongside Judy Garland.
