Biography

Kathy Bates, born Kathleen Doyle Bates on June 28, 1948, in Memphis, Tennessee, is a distinguished American actress and director renowned for her powerful performances across film, television, and theater. A graduate of Southern Methodist University, she embarked on her acting journey in New York City, where she initially secured minor roles before making her screen debut in the film Taking Off (1971). Her stage presence was solidified with her Off-Broadway performance in Vanities (1976), and she garnered critical acclaim with a Tony Award nomination for Best Lead Actress in a Play for her role in 'night, Mother (1983) and an Obie Award for Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune (1988).

Bates achieved widespread recognition with her chilling portrayal of Annie Wilkes in the psychological thriller Misery (1990), which earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress. She continued to shine with notable performances in films such as Dolores Claiborne (1995), The Waterboy (1998), and supporting roles in Fried Green Tomatoes (1991) and Titanic (1997). Her talent has been acknowledged with additional Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actress for Primary Colors (1998), About Schmidt (2002), and Richard Jewell (2019).
