William Powell

Biography

William Horatio Powell (July 29, 1892 – March 5, 1984) was a prominent American actor celebrated for his work at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Renowned for his dynamic pairing with Myrna Loy, the duo starred together in 14 films, most notably in the beloved Thin Man series, which was inspired by Dashiell Hammett's characters Nick and Nora Charles. Throughout his illustrious career, Powell earned three Academy Award nominations for Best Actor, recognized for his performances in The Thin Man (1934), My Man Godfrey (1936), and Life with Father (1947).

Following his high school graduation, Powell ventured to New York City at 18 to attend the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, graduating in 1912. He initially worked in vaudeville and stock theater before making his Hollywood debut in 1922. His breakout role came in the silent film The Last Command (1928), where he played a bitter film director opposite Emil Jannings. This paved the way for his first leading role as Philo Vance in the 1929 talkie The Canary Murder Case.

Powell's portrayal of Nick Charles in the Thin Man films showcased his charm and wit, earning him critical acclaim. His collaboration with Loy began with Manhattan Melodrama (1934) and continued to blossom. The pair also starred in the Oscar-winning The Great Ziegfeld (1936). Following personal tragedies, including the untimely death of Jean Harlow, Powell's film appearances dwindled in the 1940s, culminating in his final movie, Mister Roberts (1955). He passed away in Palm Springs, California, leaving behind a legacy marked by his distinctive voice and captivating performances. Powell is interred at Desert Memorial Park, near his wife Diana Lewis and their son, William David Powell.
