Biography
Morris Ankrum, born Morris Nussbaum on August 28, 1896, in the United States, was a distinguished character actor known for his extensive work in radio, television, and film until his passing on September 2, 1964. Before he joined Paramount Pictures in the 1930s, he adopted the stage name Ankrum, initially appearing as "Stephen Morris" before settling on Morris Ankrum in 1939.
With his commanding presence and distinctly chiseled features, Ankrum frequently portrayed authoritative figures such as military officers, judges, and scientists across more than 150 films, predominantly in the B-movie circuit. One of his notable performances was in the 1942 biopic Tennessee Johnson, where he portrayed Senator Jefferson Davis, delivering a poignant resignation speech to the Senate as he stepped into his role as the first president of the Confederate States.
Ankrum's prolific career spanned three decades, with a significant focus on the western and science-fiction genres. He appeared in classic westerns like Ride 'Em Cowboy (1942), Vera Cruz alongside legends Gary Cooper and Burt Lancaster, and Cattle Queen of Montana featuring Barbara Stanwyck and Ronald Reagan. His sci-fi credits include significant roles in Rocketship X-M (1950), Flight to Mars (1951), Red Planet Mars (1952), and the cult classic Invaders From Mars (1953), where he played an Army officer. His final years in film included appearances in Kronos (1957) and Earth vs. the Flying Saucers (1956), solidifying his legacy in genre cinema.
