Gilbert Roland
Biography
Gilbert Roland, originally named Luis Antonio Dámaso de Alonso, was a prominent Mexican-American actor whose impressive career spanned from the 1920s to the 1980s. Born on December 11, 1905, in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico, he and his family relocated to the United States due to the upheaval caused by Pancho Villa. At just 14, he ventured to Hollywood by freight train, adopting his stage name from his favorite stars, John Gilbert and Ruth Roland.
Roland's professional journey began with Paramount Pictures, and he quickly made a name for himself with notable performances, including a leading role in the 1925 romantic comedy The Plastic Age alongside Clara Bow, with whom he briefly engaged. His artistic talents extended to Spanish-language adaptations of American films, where he often portrayed romantic leads.
By the 1940s, his acting prowess garnered critical acclaim, especially for his supporting roles in films like John Huston's We Were Strangers (1949) and the acclaimed The Bad and the Beautiful (1952). He became widely recognized for his portrayal of "The Cisco Kid" in a series of films during this era. Noteworthy appearances also included his role in The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima and the epic Beneath the 12-Mile Reef (1953).
Roland was married twice, first to actress Constance Bennett from 1941 to 1946, and later to Guillermina Cantú in 1954 until his passing on May 15, 1994, from cancer at the age of 88. His legacy was cemented with nominations for two Golden Globe Awards and his induction into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960.
