Biography

Mario Brega (March 25, 1923 – July 23, 1994) was a distinguished Italian character actor known for his imposing stature. Standing at 6 feet 4 inches (1.93 m) and weighing over 250 pounds (110 kg) at his peak, Brega's physicality often led him to be cast as a thug, especially in early roles within the Western genre. However, as his career progressed, he transitioned into comedic performances, particularly in Italian cinema.

Hailing from Rome, Brega initially worked as a butcher before venturing into the world of acting. His robust build facilitated a variety of character parts, beginning with a collaboration with director Dino Risi. He gained recognition for his minor roles in Sergio Leone's iconic Spaghetti Westerns, including A Fistful of Dollars, where he played Chico; For a Few Dollars More as Niño; and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly in the role of Corporal Wallace. Additionally, he portrayed a gangster in the film Once Upon a Time in America and appeared in numerous other notable Westerns, such as Death Rides a Horse, The Great Silence, and My Name is Nobody.

Later in his career, Brega showcased his comedic talent in films directed by Carlo Verdone, featuring in works like Un sacco bello and Talcum Powder. He passed away from a heart attack in Rome in 1994.
