Jean Gabin
Biography
Jean Gabin, born Jean-Alexis Moncorgé on May 17, 1904, in Paris, emerged as a monumental figure in French cinema. The son of Madeleine Petit and Ferdinand Moncorgé, a cabaret entertainer who adopted the stage name Gabin, he spent his early years in Mériel, a village located about 22 miles north of the capital. After leaving school prematurely, Gabin worked various jobs until he entered the entertainment world at 19 with a minor role in a Folies Bergère show.
Gabin's military service with the Fusiliers marins marked a brief hiatus from performing. Upon his return, he adopted the stage name Jean Gabin and began to make a name for himself in Parisian music halls, where his performances garnered attention. His film career took off in the late 1920s, transitioning from silent films to talkies with a notable role in the 1930 production Chacun sa chance. Recognition came with his portrayal in Maria Chapdelaine (1934) and further solidified his status as a leading man with La Bandera (1936).
Gabin starred in iconic films such as Pépé le Moko (1937), La grande illusion (1937), and Le Quai des brumes (1938), gaining international acclaim. His contributions to cinema earned him the Silver Bear for Best Actor twice at the Berlin International Film Festival and the Volpi Cup at the Venice Film Festival. In recognition of his impact on French cinema, he was made a member of the Légion d'honneur. Gabin passed away on November 15, 1976, leaving behind an enduring legacy.
