Dante
Biography
Dante, born Harry August Jansen in 1883 in Copenhagen, Denmark, carved a remarkable path in the world of magic and illusion. His fascination with the art began in Chicago, where he witnessed the captivating performances of the Great Herrmann at McVicker's Theatre, which ignited his passion for the craft. Early in his career, Jansen innovated several magic tricks, notably the iconic "Sawing a woman in half," and contributed to the routines of famed magicians like Howard Thurston and Harry Kellar.
In 1922, Jansen joined forces with Thurston, taking on the role of touring manager for Thurston's second unit. It was during this time that he adopted the stage name "Dante," inspired by the legendary magician Dante the Great, whose popularity peaked in the late 19th century. By 1927, Dante was positioned as Thurston's heir apparent, solidifying his place in the lineage of magic.
Beyond his prowess as an illusionist, Dante expanded his influence into radio and film, appearing in productions such as the 1942 comedy "A-Haunting We Will Go" featuring Laurel and Hardy, as well as "Bunco Squad." He gradually stepped back from the spotlight in the late 1940s, ultimately passing his legacy to Lee Grabel in 1954. Throughout his career, Dante left an indelible mark on the realm of magic, celebrated for his creativity and contributions to the art.
