Jack Palance
Biography
Jack Palance, originally named Volodymyr Palahniuk, was born on February 18, 1919, in Lattimer Mines, Pennsylvania. The son of Ukrainian immigrants, he carved a remarkable path in Hollywood as an American actor renowned for his portrayals of tough characters and formidable villains. Throughout his illustrious career, Palance received three Academy Award nominations for Best Actor in a Supporting Role: for his performances in Sudden Fear (1952) and Shane (1953), culminating in a win nearly four decades later for his role in City Slickers (1991).
His journey began with service in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II, after which he briefly attended Stanford University before immersing himself in the world of theatre. Palance made his film debut in Panic in the Streets (1950) and soon garnered attention for his compelling performances. Notably, he portrayed Count Dracula in the 1974 television adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula and played the role of crime lord Yves Perret in Tango & Cash (1989). Additionally, he gained fame as the host of the ABC television series Ripley's Believe It or Not! from 1982 to 1986. Jack Palance passed away on November 10, 2006, from natural causes at his daughter Holly's home in Montecito, California, leaving behind a legacy of iconic roles.
