John Leguizamo
Biography
John Alberto Leguizamo Peláez, born on July 22, 1960, is a renowned Colombian-American actor, stand-up comedian, and film producer whose versatile talents have made a significant impact in entertainment. Over his expansive career, Leguizamo has featured in more than 100 films, produced over 20 films and documentaries, and appeared in numerous television shows, showcasing his range and creativity across multiple platforms.
He first gained recognition as a stand-up comedian in New York City before transitioning into notable film roles that propelled him into the spotlight. Some of his early standout performances include Luigi Mario in the fantasy film "Super Mario Bros." (1993) and Benny Blanco in the crime drama "Carlito's Way" (1993). He further captivated audiences with his portrayal of Chi-Chi Rodriguez in "To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar" (1995), earning a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
In addition to his film career, Leguizamo has made his mark on Broadway, earning four Tony Award nominations for productions like "Freak" (1998) and "Latin History for Morons" (2018), the latter of which also earned him a Special Tony Award. He won an Emmy in 1999 for his performance in "Freak," marking a historic moment as the first Latino to achieve this honor.
Leguizamo's voice work includes iconic roles as Sid the Sloth in the "Ice Age" series and Bruno Madrigal in Disney's "Encanto" (2021). His television credits span acclaimed series such as "ER," "Bloodline," and the popular "The Mandalorian." In 2023, he took on the role of host for the MSNBC series "Leguizamo Does America."
