Biography

Doro Merande, born Dora Matthews on March 31, 1892, in Columbia, Kansas, carved a memorable niche for herself as a character actress whose performances captivated audiences, regardless of the size of her roles. With her distinctive voice and quirky demeanor, she portrayed a range of characters, from meddling aunts and gossiping neighbors to curt secretaries and small-town residents, often playing older than her years. Though she made fewer film appearances, she found her true passion in live theater, primarily on the East Coast.

Orphaned as a child and raised in boarding schools, Merande moved to New York City to pursue acting immediately after her education. After years of toil on the stock stage, she achieved her Broadway breakthrough at 43, eventually appearing in over 25 productions. Notably, her scene-stealing role in Thornton Wilder's "Our Town" led her to Hollywood, where she reprised her part in the film adaptation.

Throughout her career, Merande made memorable appearances in films such as "The Gazebo" (1959), "The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming" (1966), and "The Front Page" (1974). She co-starred with Enid Markey in the sitcom "Bringing Up Buddy" (1960), but their off-screen tensions led to the show's cancellation after just one season. Doro also regularly appeared on Jackie Gleason's variety show. Tragically, she passed away from a stroke on November 1, 1975, in New York City while filming an episode.
